In 2013, we purchased 100 acres outside of Duncan, OK. Oklahoma was just coming out of a severe drought, so for over two years, we let most of the land rest and applied soil and plant management methods as recommended by the local extension office and conservation service. We planted Bermuda grass in two pastures to help improve grazing and diversity. We purchased our first South Poll heifers in June 2016. I didn’t realize I had a cow fetish until then! In 2017, we purchased another 40 acres adjacent to our farm. It had been used in hay production, so we are currently bringing the soils and plants back to good grazing with the help of our cows. Other improvements include livestock water pipelines and cross fencing.
We attend cattle and soil health clinics in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. During the Missouri clinics, South Poll cattle were determined to be the best fit for our operation. We are Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certified. “BQA is a nationally coordinated, state implemented program that provides common sense husbandry techniques coupled with accepted scientific knowledge to raise cattle under optimum management and environmental conditions.” These programs include best practices around good record keeping and protecting herd health. When better quality cows leave the farm and reach the market place, the producer, packer, and consumer all benefit. ~
